Tips For Relocating Long Distance That Will Make Your Move Easier

Wherever your new property is located, moving can be difficult. But, it’s even more stressful if you’re relocating far away to another city or state.

Perhaps your long-distance move is the result of a new job, unforeseen family dilemma, or financial issue, either way, moving to another city or even further can cause more anxiety along with the fear that you are leaving everything familiar behind.

But, Don’t Let Relocating Overwhelm You In Miami!

To keep the process as easy and manageable as possible, we’ve put together some great tips for moving a long distance in Florida.

Pack like a pro.

Don’t be overwhelmed by the stress of packing. There are many clever tricks you can take advantage of to pack up your home quickly and efficiently. If you’re lacking boxes, wrap up your clothes in dresser drawers or suitcases.

  • Don’t leave any loose space when packing.
  • Pack items within each other.

For example, put your kitchenware inside your tupperware. Use linens and towels as padding in boxes by wrapping them up in black trash bags.

It might seem odd, but these tricks will help you optimize space and pack more efficiently which is vital when preparing for a big move.

Downsize.

Do you really need to take the out-of-date “spare room” TV with you? Perhaps, you have a garage full of old stuff that you’ve been meaning to throw away.

If you’re planning a long-distance move, there’s no better time than now to purge your belongings and get a clutter-free, fresh start. Even if your new house is similar in size and layout, do you really want to cram it full of years worth of junk you don’t even use? If it isn’t something you absolutely love or use on a regular basis, now is the time to sell it or give it away.

Often times people move with all their possessions, only to find months later they are still surrounded by boxes they never unpacked. Do you own tons of books that you’re never going to get round to reading? Or general clutter than you think you need but in reality NEVER use? If it’s not something you actively USE, you probably don’t need it.

Also, if it costs more to ship furniture than what it’s actually worth to sell or buy, you might want to consider leaving it behind.

Take heed when hiring movers.

Although most moving firms should be reputable and reliable companies, it’s always a smart idea to keep valuable items, such as jewelry with you. Not only are these items small and easy to lose or damage, but it’s also not worth risking them going “missing”.

If you own anything valuable that you can’t move, have the items insured in case they become lost or damaged.

You should also mark boxes with your name and address as many big moving companies may move several families at once.

If possible, drive your car.

Shipping a car can be expensive and there’s no guarantee it will arrive on time. It’s understandable that shipping companies prefer to wait until they have lots of cars instead of shipping only one car at a time.

This means you might not know exactly when your car will finally be delivered. And if you’re accustomed to driving everywhere, being in a new city, without transportation will get very frustrating, very fast.

Plan a road trip instead and have an adventure traveling across the country or state.

Be prepared to buy some new things.

Does your new home have white goods? Perhaps, you left yours behind as a part of the sale. No matter the circumstances, chances are there will be a few things you inevitably have to buy when moving into a new property.

To be prepared plan ahead and save a little cash away for these purchases. The last thing you want is any additional stress caused by suddenly realizing you need to buy a few extra kitchen or bathroom essentials.

Be patient and give it a week or two.

Don’t expect to settle right away. Even if you’re leaving behind a neighborhood you didn’t like or a property that was too small, getting accustomed to a new house and a new area can be emotionally challenging as well.

Don’t be surprised if after a couple of weeks you still feel a little out of place. It can take a few weeks to really feel comfortable in a new town.

To help bond with the community, try and get to know the area, and do some exploring. Be patient and you will feel right at home in no time.
